Electrical Panel Upgrades in Waco, TX
The 100-amp panel that served a 1975 house fine is now being asked to run an EV circuit, a tankless unit, and a workshop. We upgrade panels to modern 200-amp service — permitted, inspected, and priced in writing first.

When a Panel Upgrade Is the Real Answer
New loads the old service cannot host
EV charging, electric tankless water heating, hot tubs, and shop equipment are the classic triggers. The load calculation says whether the panel truly needs to grow — sometimes it does not, and we say so.
FPE, Zinsco, and other earned reputations
Certain legacy panels have documented histories of breakers failing to trip under fault. When we find one, you get the evidence and a written replacement price — the decision stays yours.
Heat damage and corrosion
Scorched bus bars, warm breaker faces, and rust from a leaky meter base are conditions that get worse, not better. A panel showing them should be replaced on your schedule instead of failing on its own.
No room left for anything
A panel physically full of tandem breakers is a constraint on every future project. Sometimes a subpanel solves it; sometimes the service itself is the bottleneck.
Why Panel Work Is Common Around Here
Local housing stock and Texas loads collide at the panel:
Pre-1980s neighborhoods on 100-amp service
Large parts of Waco, Bellmead, and McGregor were built when 100 amps was generous. Modern all-electric loads have outgrown that math, which is why upgrades cluster in older neighborhoods.
Cooling loads that never quit
Central air runs hard from May to October here, and it is usually the biggest standing load in the calculation. Panels that would coast in a milder climate run near their edge in a Texas August.
Utility coordination
A service upgrade involves the utility's side of the meter as well as ours — disconnect scheduling, meter work, and sometimes service-drop changes. We coordinate it so your power is off for hours, not days.
How the Job Works
Load calculation and panel assessment
What the house draws now, what you plan to add, and the physical condition of the existing equipment.
Written quote you approve first
Panel, permit, utility coordination, and any code corrections itemized in one number before work is scheduled.
Permitted replacement
The swap is choreographed with the utility to keep the outage short, and the work is inspected.
Energize, label, and walk through
Every circuit verified and labeled, the new capacity explained, and the labor backed by a 1-year warranty.
What Moves a Panel Upgrade Quote
Panel hardware is a fraction of the job. The real variables, with financing available on larger projects:
Service entrance condition
Meter base, mast, and service conductors sometimes need replacement along with the panel — the assessment catches that before the quote, not after.
Code corrections in scope
Grounding, bonding, and AFCI/GFCI requirements come along when the panel changes. The permit scope defines how much rides with the swap.
Circuit count and relocation
Moving a panel or splitting to a subpanel costs more than a like-for-like swap in place; distance and wall construction set the labor.

Straight Answers, Before You Call
How do I know if my panel is 100 amps or 200?
The main breaker is usually labeled with the number, and the service wire size tells the rest of the story. Send us a photo and we can usually pre-read it — the formal answer comes from the on-site assessment and load calculation.
Does an EV circuit always require a panel upgrade?
No, and be wary of anyone who says otherwise before running the math. Charging equipment can be set to lower amperages, and load-management devices can share capacity. When the calculation genuinely comes up short, you get the upgrade price in writing and decide with real numbers.
How long is the power off during an upgrade?
Most single-family swaps are de-energized for a working day or less, with the utility disconnect and reconnect scheduled ahead of time. Complicated service-entrance work can extend that, and we tell you the expected window before you commit.
Will the inspection flag other things in my house?
The inspection covers the permitted work — the panel and what code requires with it, like grounding and bonding. It is not a whole-house audit. That said, if we see something dangerous while we are in there, we tell you, with a written price, and you decide.
